The Florida Family Association rented a plane and flew an anti-gay banner over Disney World.

Cross your fingers and hope
the gays visit after normal business hours
By Maurice Lacunza
Last week we learned that Florida (R) Rep. Allen West gave a speech to a right-wing Christian group warning that the end of society was nearing because of gay marriage. A few years ago, Pat Robertson warned Florida that God would punish them with a hurricane because of Gay Day at Disney World.

Gay Day is back. Apparently there are some Christians in Florida who do not like gay people. According to Newsy, the Florida Family Association is worried that Christian families will be exposed to gay people on Gay Day this June 4, 2011. They issued a statement condemning Gay Day and asked gay citizens to at least visit the park after normal business hours. They rented a plane and dragged a banner over the skies of Disney Land that read, "WARNING GAY DAY AT DISNEY 6/4."  Newsy reports that the plane cost 7,000 dollars. For the record, Disney World supports Gay Day because it brings in 150,000 people who spend over 150 million dollars in six days. To Disney World, Gay people are good customers and they clean up after themselves. To normal people, gays are our neighbors, our teachers, our firemen, our brother, our sister.

The trigger
So I shake my head in disbelief over the hatred shown by this Christian organization. Do regular Christian people really think that the gays are evil? Do they really believe that the gays are going to end society? As far as I know, regular people have gay sons and daughters. They have gay cousins. They have gay brothers. None of them think that their gay child is going to be the reason for the next Apocalypse. None of them believe that their gay son is going to be the trigger that ends marriage for heterosexuals.

Jesus would roll over in
his grave if he had one

It is time for Christians to stand up against this gay bashing. Seriously, if you are a good Christian, it is your Christlike duty to speak up for the lesser of these. The behavior of FFA goes against the four gospels of Christ found in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. In fact, Jesus would have a fit if he saw this type of behavior today. Christian, stand up and say something in your church for the acceptance of all of God's children. It is time.

  1. I wonder if they flew within 3 nautical miles of the Magic Kingdom at 3000 feet or lower? If so, they violated federal airspace laws. There is a 9/11-related airspace restriction over Disney World.

Yes, this happened at Disney WORLD (in Florida), not DisneyLAND (in California).

  2. Reprehensible. I think it was CS Lewis who said, "Christianity will make you a whole lot better, or a whole lot worse." This is case in point for the latter. It astounds me that these "good Christians" don't look at the gospels and see themselves in the story: as the Pharisees! Thanks for writing about this.

  3. This is one of the reasons I no longer call myself a Christian.

  4. How can people be so hypocritical?? As a devout Catholic with a gay grandmother, I think those that are so very judgmental can't honestly claim to be Christian. They are behaving as far from true Christianity as possible! The intolerance among this group is appalling, and truly depressing. Thank you for your opinion about this; it's relieving to see there is still intelligence in humanity.

  5. Thanks for the correction on World vs. Land. And that is an interesting point about the air space. I will look into it.

  6. Supposed to be the land of the FREE. What happened to welcoming all walks of life, race and religion? You either accept people as they are, or leave the country. Good men and women die for our freedom. Gay, straight, bi, black, white, red, yellow, blue, christian, mormon, catholic, pagan. They die out there for us. And every time we pull some bs like this, it's like spitting on anyone ever killed for this country. That's my sleep deprived rant.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mohandas (Mahatma) Ghandi proved how to effectively fight such bigotry and ignorance. Let us not forget how King's bus boycott brought Montgomery, Alabama's racist public transportation company to its knees in the 1950's. Let us remember Ghandi's simple but monumental 1930's answer to the British salt monopoly, marching with the Indian people to the sea to make their own salt. Don't bitch about hatred, oppression and bigotry. Let complaining aimlessly be the blunted weapon of the ill mannered and the bigot. Rather, rejoice that the Christian fundamentalists waste thousands in financial resources to spew their hatred and backwardness across the sky. Then, support Disney World's "Gay Day" (a seriously polarizing name for a proud celebration (Better "Rainbow Day" or "Pride Day")) every time, in astonishingly record-breaking numbers, with withering amounts of currency. The bigoted will have to "eat crow", just as they had to swallow Jim Crow, and just as silently as they dined when the world didn't end last month.

  8. I do not like telling religious people that their religious views are wrong. Christians in America fall into several categories, ranging from oldschool traditional denominations to the newer and weirder evangelical sects that now have Jihadist ambitions to take over the politics and governmental structure of America. If rightwing sects believe that they can take over America and turn it into a gulag, who am I to tell them they're wrong? I mean, obviously they're wrong, but they're a minority opinion and they will never succeed. Let them say nonsense. Rightwing Christianity is a laughably ignorant delusional group of people. We make too much of them when we pretend that they matter.

  9. Last time we visited DisneyWorld, a sky-writer was writing "JESUS SAVES" over the castle - it was appearing in every picture people took of the castle. Upsetting? Perhaps. But this is some seriously offensive stuff.
