According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the negotiations between Eddie Long and his four victims has not made any progress and the case is likely to go to trial in the fall. The Judge in the case was optimistic that a settlement was near, but, nothing new has come from the group for some time now. Eddie Long had secret marriage rituals with four teen-age boys from his church. The relationships began when the boys were 17 years old and continued for several years. As I understand it, the whole matter came to light when one of the boys sought Eddie for condolence when a friend of his died. Eddie was more interested in having sex than in lending support in the boy's grief. Another boy found out about it and soon the two talked and discovered that they both were secret lovers of Eddie Long. They both had candle-lit ceremonies in which Eddie quoted the Bible and had the boys respectively give vows of monogamy. Angry and disillusioned, they broke into Eddie's office, which was in a bedroom suite in the back of the church, to steal his ipad and his black hills gold jewelry. These were items cherished by Eddie and they felt it would hurt him. When the boys were arrested for the break in, they told the above reasons to explain their criminal behavior. Soon a civil lawsuit followed against Eddie by the two boys. When that news hit the air, two MORE boys came forward and said that they too had solemn private candle-lit ceremonies in which they vowed their monogamy to Eddie Long. Now, there are four civil lawsuits against Eddie Long.
The reason that these are not criminal suits is because the boys were past the age of consent, 16, in Georgia. The boys feel groomed and used by Eddie. In Mr. Long's defense, he did buy them cars, paid for trips, college tuition and new clothes. He introduced them to high rolling music figures, actors and famous people. In his mind, I am sure that Eddie Long felt that he paid for his bling and the boys should not be crying foul. It is hard to say what is right in this case. Eddie paid for his sex via the gifts and money. Yet, Eddie preaches against gay rights and is a staunch supporter against gay marriage. Yet, he had four secret marriage ceremonies with four boys! The whole thing is one big hypocrisy and yet, Eddie's church is standing behind him several thousand strong. Even when it is in their face, they just can't believe that Eddie Long likes strong strapping boys. The trial should reveal quite a bit more about this case. If there is a negotiation, we may not be privy to the details. So I don't know which way to lean...get a settlement for the boys or expose Eddie Long for the fraud that he is. We shall see.
