What do Idaho ex-Senator Larry Craig and Newt Gingrich have in common? They both are working on the down low. Larry was foot-tapping the bathroom stall next to his as a signal that he wanted to have some gay sex with the next stall. It is an unspoken language that the gay community learned to develop during the years that it was illegal to be gay. Newt Gingrich is tapping a different song. He is trying to signal to the deep racist beliefs that he thinks some Americans are harboring. If you read the full article in Salon, you come away thinking, Gingrich is from Georgia; Georgia is in the South- therefore Gingrich is trying to raise some old-school anti-black sentiments to win the 2012 election.
Gingrich blames Obama for the fact that 1 out of 7 people are receiving food stamps. Anyone who stops to think about it will realize that this is the aftermath of the Bush years and the economic collapse from Wall Street greed and bankers robbing the country blind. But Gingrich and Limbaugh want to blame it on the President. Why? Because he is black and the myth is that all blacks are on welfare. Gingrich's veiled racism goes further:
When asked by host David Gregory if he was racist, Gingrich replied "That's bizarre," and added, "I have never said anything about President Obama which is racist." Tap Tap..
Gingrich told Georgia Republicans: "that 2012 will be the most momentous election "since 1860," if you recall, that is the year that we elected Abraham Lincoln who was our anti-slavery President. Tap Tap..
Gingrich also said that we should bring back a "voting standard" that requires voters to know their American history. This is similar to the tests that African-Americans were forced to take in order to vote. Poll tests were made illegal by the Voting Rights Act. Tap Tap..
And last week Gingrich said Obama "knows how to get the whole country to resemble Detroit," which happens to be home for a predominant number of blacks. Tap Tap..
So what does this all Tap Tap add up to? They are like clues, little signals, a kind-of mitigated talking-point; pointing towards the never actually spoken topic: Blacks are inferior to whites and I am white therefore I am superior and you should vote for me. It also means that Gingrich is going to sully the good name of anyone who is from Atlanta, Georgia. Not all Georgians are anti-black and Newt thinks that he is going to gently tap into a well of secret racist beliefs. I think he is wrong. I think the day has come and gone for folks to continue harboring anti-black sentiments. This just shows that Newtie is digging deep into his bag of washed up tricks to try and win an election that he should never have run for in the first place. This is the first sign of the dirty mud that Gingrich is beginning to sling.
For those who remember the Freedom Riders, it is hard to believe that Gingrich would play the race card. This is a sleezy nod towards racism; a cold slap in the face. There were white people and black people who gave up their lives, some were beaten, others molested and raped; some set on fire. The deep south didn't want equality; they wanted things to stay the same. Mr. Gingrich, listen up: the south has changed and we don't need white racists like you stirring up old hatred. You should be utterly ashamed. For readers who have gotten this far, this is a very serious matter and should not be taken lightly. The Freedom Riders were not many, but, they were determined to ride on white only buses and eat at white only lunch counters. Robert Kennedy and President Kennedy took the governor of Alabama to task by bringing federal marshals and the national guard to restore order- of which the dis-order was caused by racist police, the governor and KKK supporters. Today, years have gone by and our nation is in a state of healing. We do not need a racial divide caused by a white old man who wants to be President Gingrich. We don't need white only bathrooms again. Gingrich, you are a shame to our country and a threat to our future.
Vote No on Newt if you believe in equal rights, equality of races and clean politics. There is more than what I have noted above; however this gives you a snapshot of what Newtie Gingrich is up to. For further reading, go to Salon.com:
